Brionvega

Italian electronics treated as architecture

Brionvega began in Milan in 1945 as BP Radio S.r.l., a post-war electronics business founded by Giuseppe Brion and engineer Leone Pajetta. The company adopted the Brionvega name in 1960. Under Giuseppe and Onorina Brion it became unusual among radio and television manufacturers: technical development was paired with a sustained programme of architecture, graphics and industrial design. Marco Zanuso and Richard Sapper were central collaborators, while Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Mario Bellini and others gave individual products distinct identities rather than applying a single house style.

The breakthrough years were the early 1960s. Zanuso and Sapper’s Doney portable television appeared in 1962 and received a Compasso d’Oro. Their work explored compact cases, hinges, handles and components that made electronics easier to place and use. Brionvega’s purpose-built factory at Asolo, designed by Marco Zanuso, extended the same argument to the place of production: industry, landscape and formal order were treated as one design problem. Historic Brionvega objects entered museum collections and helped define the international image of modern Italian consumer design.

Two audio systems now form the core of Dyke & Dean’s Brionvega range. The original Radiofonografo rr126 was designed in 1965 by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. It combines a radio, record player, amplifier and movable loudspeakers in a piece of freestanding furniture. The current rr226 is a faithful production re-edition updated around a Pro-Ject turntable and Ortofon cartridge. It should not be called an untouched 1965 appliance: the design project dates from 1965, while rr226 identifies the contemporary production model.

Mario Bellini’s Totem followed in 1971. Its closed cubic form conceals the turntable and controls; the two loudspeakers rotate outward like wings or can be removed and placed apart. Brionvega’s manual records the original as rr130, while the current edition is rr231. The contrast with the Radiofonografo is instructive. The Castiglionis made a modular piece that reads horizontally across the room; Bellini compressed an entire system into a geometric volume and made opening it part of the act of listening.

Today Brionvega is a Milan company focused on returning these “Art Products” to production in Italy. The current range does not rely on nostalgia alone. Its turntables, amplification and connections are contemporary enough for regular use, but the switches, covers, separable speakers and physical operation remain deliberately visible. Dyke & Dean’s published range comprises seven products: two Totem rr231 finishes, four standard Radiofonografo rr226 colours and the numbered green 60th-anniversary Radiofonografo.

Original design by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1965.

Half a century of uniqueness, told by a smile like on the first day.
